Despite a spirited comeback attempt, the Winnipeg Jets fell to the Boston Bruins Sunday night, dropping their record to 5-9-1.

The Bruins came out victorious by a score of 3-2, getting a hard-fought road win in a game that was close from start to finish.

The Jets were able to strike first in the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the first period on an Alexander Burmistrov goal. Boston answered with a goal of their own, but Winnipeg gained momentum when Evander Kane lit the lamp with just 26.3 seconds left in the second period.

But Boston answered right away, scoring with 1.3 seconds remaining in the period. The momentum that Winnipeg had gained was lost, and when the two teams came out of the locker room for the final frame, it didn’t take long for Boston to take control. Just 36 seconds into the third, Brad Marchand scored what would turn out to be the game-winner, quieting the MTS Centre’s crowd of more than 15,000.

After falling behind 3-2, the Jets made a strong comeback bid. They were able to put 10 shots on net after tallying only 14 in the first two periods. The Jets never quit, nearly tying the game in the game’s final minutes.

Despite a feisty effort, the loss for Winnipeg means that they are now losers of three straight, all of which came at home. The bit of good news to come from this game was Kane’s goal, which ended an eight-game scoring drought for the young winger.

Going forward, Kane needs to begin scoring with more regularity, and the Jets as a whole must do the same. The Jets have failed to score three or more goals in five straight games. When you’re struggling to score goals, pressure mounts on your defense and goaltender.

Looking at film from this game’s third period will provide a nice building block for this team to build off.
