Carolina Hurricanes Reach Critical Game On Schedule

Eric Bolte-USA TODAY Sports

The Carolina Hurricanes are a team that are very hit-and-miss this season. The Hurricanes are 8-5-1 going into a Thursday game against the Winnipeg Jets. After losing their last game, this game on Thursday takes on some extra meaning for Carolina. If the Hurricanes want to be a playoff game in 2013, it is games like this one that could break Carolina.

Carolina has had trouble all season long in net with Cam Ward struggling in just about every game. While Carolina did make a big trade in the off-season to get Jordan Staal, this is only so much that Staal and his brother Eric Staal can do for this team. If the Hurricanes can get a night where the Staals combine for five points, and the rest of the team can score three or more goals, it should result in a winning effort.

This team can score goals and can win games, but until Cam Ward is on the bench and Dan Ellis plays more, Carolina is dead in the water.

Thursday night now becomes a huge event for the Hurricanes and their hopes in 2013. If the Hurricanes lose this game against an inferior opponent, it could be the sign of more trouble to come. This is a game where whoever is in net almost has to put up a shutout, or at least give up fewer than two goals. It isn’t a make-or-break game, but it is getting close to being one for Hurricanes team that will need to be well over .500 to make the playoffs.
