Henrik Zetterberg has had a lot of his shoulders this season for the Detroit Red Wings with players like Nicklas Lidstrom retiring after last year. Zetterberg is leading a team that has been mediocre out of the gate at 7-6-3 with 21 points so far this season. While there is a lot that Zetterberg can do on the ice, Detroit needs to do more around him to make sure that his efforts don’t go unappreciated by the end of the year.
There have been huge expectations in Detroit, and with the team being a serious candidate to win the Stanley Cup each season, fans and media alike just assumed that this year wouldn’t be any different. It has definitely been just that with Detroit’s .500 start to the year. Zetterberg has had to deal with injuries around him as, but is still scoring over a point a game. Zetterberg does have the potential to keep up this pace, but the Red Wings are hanging onto the playoff hopes by only a thread.
Zetterberg could find himself finishing with around 60 points for this 48-game NHL season if he can keep up his current pace. I really hope for his sake that the team can find more goals and get healthy quickly, along with getting even more goaltending from Jimmy Howard. It could turn into a lost season for Zetterberg and the Red Wings, if things don’t improve in the win column before too long.
Zetterberg has the job now of bringing Hockeytown back to the top of the NHL.
