Patrik Berglund Catching Fire For St. Louis Blues
Rookie netminder Jake Allen only gave up two goals to the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night, but was unable to get a fourth consecutive win as his Blues teammates gave him little offensive support. Patrik Berglund had the lone goal for the Blues in the 2-1 loss and he now has goals in four consecutive games.
The Blues had defeated the Detroit Red Wings, Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks over a five-day stretch as Allen got wins in all of his first three NHL starts. The Blues streak ended against a Sharks team that was able stop a seven-game skid with the much-needed win.
Berglund’s recent hot streak began with a shorthanded goal against the Red Wings on Feb. 13 and it is his second scoring streak of at least three games this season. He had a goal in the Blues’ opening night 6-0 triumph over Detroit, and scored in consecutive games against the Minnesota Wild, Columbus Blue Jackets and the Red Wings from Jan. 27 – Feb. 1. In 16 games, Berglund now leads the team with nine goals, just under halfway from matching his total from a full 2011-12 season. He is playing like a top-six forward despite spending a great deal of time on the team’s third line with Chris Stewart and Vladimir Sobotka. Ten players now have at least 10 points for the Blues, as they continue to have one of the most balanced offenses in the league. Berglund’s scoring streak is just the latest bright spot this season and time will tell how long he gets to stay in the spotlight on this very talented team.
