The New York Islanders have tried to make moves this season in net, and decided to put Rick DiPietro on waivers this week.
There is another move that they could try for. While it may not work, it would be worth the Islanders making a call to Tim Thomas to see if he would be interested in playing for just 20-25 games to end the year. Thomas is sitting out this season to spend more time with his family and should be back next season.
There is no guarantee that happens, but the Islanders have to try anything at some point.
Thomas was one of the best goalies in the NHL during his time with the Boston Bruins. When Thomas announced that he was going to sit this season out, Boston decided to trade Thomas away. The Islanders have to hope that Thomas does return next season, but I would really like to see the Islanders try to at least keep Thomas on the phone and see what he says.
Thomas is going to be the starting goaltender for the Islanders next season but until then, the Islanders are going to struggle and hang around the .500 mark as they are going into the weekend’s games. While the team is getting great scoring out of John Tavares, he has struggled to score in recent games.
That just puts more pressure on the team trying to stop goals from happening. The Islanders are desperate, and desperate times may call for measures like calling Tim Thomas.
