The start to the season obviously has not been ideal for the Philadelphia Flyers. But when you consider what they lost, both up front and on the blue line, this season wasn’t exactly going to be a walk in the park for them.
Luckily, their key players are starting to catch fire. While this team isn’t still without its issues, the recent explosion of offense from the likes of Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek have proven to be very beneficial in helping the Flyers on the right track.
Much was made about the early season slump of Claude Giroux. After being named captain, most expected him to fly out of the gate and immediately post Hart Trophy numbers. When you consider what he did last year, that’s not an entirely unreasonable expectation.
But after a slow start, Giroux is back up to putting points on the stat sheet in bunches. He’s back up to nearly point-per-game numbers, with 20 points in 21 games on the season so far. His recent stretch has included a five-game point streak that is still active, during which he’s tallied half of his total points for the year. It’s safe to say that he’s found his game.
Jakub Voracek has been even more impressive. His point streak sits at six games, with 14 points over the course of that streak. His point total is up to 24 on the season. The Flyers needed a big year from him, and it looks like he is stepping up into the role that they had hoped.
Obviously two guys aren’t enough to carry the Flyers, and they’ll cool off a bit eventually. But for right now, the offensive boost they’re receiving from Giroux and Voracek is incredibly valuable to a team just trying to find some consistency in this shortened season.
