The Dallas Stars got a big win over the St. Louis Blues on Sunday, thanks to a strong performance from goaltender Kari Lehtonen and Erik Cole’s first goal since joining the team. The Stars sent leading scorer Michael Ryder to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Cole last week and Sunday’s game was his second with the Stars.
Cole had three goals and six points for the Canadiens this season, well of his normal production. The trade was a bit of a head-scratcher in Dallas but if Cole can find some chemistry on a line with Derek Roy and Antoine Roussel the trade may work out for both sides.
Roy, Loui Eriksson and Jaromir Jagr also scored for the Stars and the team converted one of their three power play opportunities. It was Lehtonen’s second game back from a groin injury and a great bounce-back game after a tough 5-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday. The Stars were able to stay on track with Lehtonen out and should continue to stay in the playoff hunt with him back between the pipes. In Ryder’s absence, Jagr is now the team’s leading scorer with six goals and 14 points. If Cole can return to scoring form with his new team, the Stars would have a set of top-six forwards that can hang with pretty much any other team in the league. Eriksson, Jamie Benn and Jagr have been phenomenal for the team, and Roussel continues to impress in his first NHL season. The youngster has four goals and seven points since being recalled from the AHL on Feb. 11.
