In need of a bit of a boost after dropping back-to-back games, in extremely disappointing fashion, the Chicago Blackhawks shook things up a bit when they recalled Jimmy Hayes from the Rockford Icehogs on Tuesday afternoon.
It’s not a major move, but one that could pay off for the Hawks, with the way that Hayes is playing of late down in Rockford.
In order to bring Hayes up, the Hawks assigned Steve Montador to Rockford after he passed through waivers. That’s the much smaller side of this story. Hayes has been brilliant for the Icehogs of late, and the Hawks are certainly hoping to catch some of that heat in order to snap their brief skid.
Hayes has 39 points for the Hogs this season, including 22 goals, which leaves him tied for the team lead. That includes a hat trick over the weekend.
The largest benefit of bringing Hayes into the fold is that it likely gets Brandon Bollig and/or Jamal Mayers out of the lineup. Even better, Hayes is more than just a big frame. Yes, he’s massive at 6’5″, but he brings a nice set of hands to the equation as well. He can get in front of the net and make things happen.
It remains to be seen where Hayes will play when the Blackhawks do see action again on Thursday, but one would have to imagine he’ll be somewhere in the top nine, potentially up on the first or second line. We should have a better idea of where he’ll be on Wednesday.
One thing is for sure, this move was a long time coming for Hayes. We’ll see if he can take advantage of the opportunity.
