The Washington Capitals had very high expectations coming into this lockout shortened season. With head coach Adam Oates coming in and applying his new system in Washington, he needed to grab some players that would fit in right away and make a difference from day one.

Even though it has been a very tough season so far, one bright shining star has came through and has been the spark that fans at the Verizon Center wanted. Center Mike Ribeiro has been dynamite for an offense that has had problems putting the puck in the net. Ribeiro sets up players with precise passes and perfect timing, a big part why the Capitals have had the recent success.

Washington’s front office made a big move in the off-season by trading Cody Eakin and a second-round pick for the veteran center. George McPhee has publicly stated that he is fond of the off-season move, and has often received credit from his teammates like Alex Ovechkin.

Why wouldn’t they love Ribeiro? He has been the perfect player on the ice, and his statistics back up his flashy play. With his most recent goal against the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night, Ribeiro now has 29 points, ten of them being goals. He is just 11 shy of earning his 600th point, and that could come sooner than you might think.

He is averaging more than one point a game and plays better in bigger games. With the amount of must-wins that Washington has coming up, look for Ribeiro to be more clutch than ever.
