The Anaheim Ducks have had a fantastic year to this point. When you look at reasons for their success, you look at the big names.
The guys like Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, along with the men between the pipes, among others, are the ones that tend to get most of the publicity when talking about this team. But one player has been very under-the-radar for the Ducks this year, and he’s one that they brought in last summer: Daniel Winnik.
Winnik had bounced around quite a bit prior to coming to the Ducks. He’d been with three different clubs in the three years prior to signing with Anaheim last summer. He signed a two-year deal with the Ducks, bringing a cap hit just under $2 million, giving him a bit of stability for at least a couple of years.
The signing has certainly worked out, probably better than anyone could have expected. Winnik has always been a pretty solid player, but he’s enjoying a career year with the Ducks.
With 14 points on the season, Winnik is on pace to set a new career best in points. He’s been featured in the top six for much of the year, mostly thanks to his hot start to the season. He had seven points in his first five games of the season.
Aside from producing points at a better rate than he has in his career, he’s also a fantastic presence in the locker room. Teams don’t find success like the Ducks are having without some solid chemistry floating around in there. He’s not the only reason for that, but he’s certainly a big part of it.
He’s not going to get much credit for it, but Daniel Winnik is having a terrific season so far for the Ducks. Nice to see for a guy who’s made a living in the bottom six over the course of his career.
