Aaron Volpatti Getting A Shot On Washington Capitals First Line
In what has become something of a revolving door, with Brooks Laich out, Volpatti is the latest forward to get a crack at joining the top line, next to Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom.
Volpatti hasn’t been in Washington long, having played just four games with the Caps after he was picked up off of waivers. Prior to that, he had played 16 games with the Vancouver Canucks, mostly being placed in the lineup for the purposes of adding some physicality.
He’ll be expected to provide some of that up on the top line with Ovechkin and Backstrom. That’s part of what the Capitals like that has convinced them to give Volpatti a shot. They like his physicality and the fact that he can bring a net presence to the mix that the others they’ve tried on the top line haven’t brought.
Volpatti also has the ability to protect the Capitals’ two stars. He’s demonstrated this season that he has no fear of dropping the gloves and spicing things up a bit.
This isn’t the first time Volpatti will be up on the top line. He joined them for a bit in the Caps’ last game. This time, he’s getting a full time shot. We’ll see if he can do what others have not been able to, and take advantage of the opportunity to play up on that top line regularly.
