One of the results of the NHL lockout was the fact that the salary cap is going to shrink going into next season. Which means we’re going to see some teams scramble in order to get their numbers down.
That’s going to be an interesting thing to watch. Luckily for the Ottawa Senators, they aren’t in a position where they really need to shave any money off of the books. In fact, they could add plenty and still have plenty of room between their payroll and the cap. Still better, they have an absolutely stacked farm system.
This is a team that is built as well as any for the future. We see some of their core on the current roster. Erik Karlsson obviously leads that group, but there are others. Kyle Turris has really turned his game on since arriving in Ottawa. We’ve seen plenty more of their future talent grace the roster this season as well.
Jakob Silfverberg, Mika Zibanejad, and Kaspars Daugavins are all guys that have made somewhat of an impact this year, but are looked at as guys who will be a big part of this team in the future. Not to mention the likes of Mark Stone, Matt Puempel, and Stefan Noesen, among others. And that’s just up front.
On the blue line, joining Karlsson are the likes of Jared Cowen and Cody Ceci. That’s an excellent 1-3 on the blue line. Between the pipes, you’re looking at Robin Lehner as the potential goaltender of the future, with Ben Bishop in the mix as well.
As the season wears on, we’ll look at some of these guys more in depth. But regardless of whether or not the Senators make the playoffs, this team is one that is loaded for the next several years. And are going to be a terrifying team to match up with not too far from now.
