The Tampa Bay Lightning went 2-1 last week, but goaltenders Anders Lindback and Mathieu Garon played well enough to give them a chance every game.
For that very reason, I’ve chosen to honor both as the Lightning’s Player of this past week.
Lindback started things off, saving 37 of 39 shots in Tampa Bay’s 3-2 win over good buddy Jacob Markstrom and the Florida Panthers.
He followed that up by making 27 saves against the New York Islanders, with only John Tavares getting one past. Unfortunately, Evgeni Nabokov pitched a shutout and the Lightning was again outshot, resulting in a loss. Truly, that game left fans questioning what happened to all of their team’s offensive firepower.
Garon, in his first game action since suffering a lower body injury versus Pittsburgh, extended his dominance over the Carolina Hurricanes. Only Eric Staal‘s third period goal kept him from a shutout, and that came after the Lightning had built a 4-0 lead. Not bad for a guy who hadn’t played in over a week.
As we flip to a new week beginning Monday night at home against the Philadelphia Flyers, let’s hope these two netminders can keep up their stellar play while also receiving more offensive contributions. If that occurs, this team could end up on a winning streak, with the very real possibility of making a late-season playoff push. At the least, it will give the Lightning a chance to win every night and that’s all one can ask for … right?
