There are some points of the season where a team must find a way to win to have any hopes for their future. The San Jose Sharks will face one of those games on Saturday afternoon against the Minnesota Wild. The Sharks are four points behind the Wild in the Western Conference standings and with the very bunched-up standings, San Jose is in a must-win situation.
San Jose finally won a game on Wednesday, even if it took a shootout to get it done — that’s a positive for a team that has had issues for the last two months.
This game in Minnesota will be the fourth straight road game for the Sharks and while fatigue can come into play during a long road trip, this isn’t the time for it. The Sharks are going to need a strong performance out of Antti Niemi in goal and hopefully players like Patrick Marleau get back to scoring on a regular basis.
The Sharks are on the brink of being out of the playoff race with their play over the last two months. There are only 19 games left in the regular season and that means that time is beginning to slip away from this San Jose team. I think that this game will decide a lot on whether or not the team trades away star players at the deadline.
There are many players who are playing for the lives on the team during this game on Saturday. The Sharks must win it to keep this current team together, and keep the idea of ‘waiting until next year’ away for a little while longer.
