Every good team needs a leader they can play around and build their success with. In years past, that leader for the Washington Capitals has been Alex Ovechkin. This year, however, has been very different. Early in the season, Ovechkin struggled mightily and wasn’t being the true captain that every team needs. No player stepped up and showed that they were going to lead the team, and that has been a gaping hole for Adam Oates’ Capitals.
Recently, the Capitals have picked things up. They have won the past three games and are only one point away from the playoffs, not too bad for a team who has had so many flaws. As they have been playing better, the captain has been playing perfect. Ovechkin has picked it up, played great and given fans around Washington a reason to stand up and have faith in their hockey team.
The Great Eight has been a huge part of this three-game winning streak, that has put the Capitals right back in the thick of the playoff hunt. He has seven points in the three-game span, four of them being goals.
Against the New York Rangers on Sunday night, Ovechkin shined yet again on a big stage. He scored two points, one being a goal, and he also tallied a shootout goal to beat the Rangers and get the extra point during the extra period.
The captain will have to be clutch during the next couple games, as they have a very tough schedule. Luckily, they will be returning home. I have a good feeling that fans at the Verizon Center will be on their feet and ready to cheer on Ovechkin and the Caps.
