Anton Babchuk, Cory Sarich The Latest Calgary Flames In Trade Rumors
Jarome Iginla isn’t the only player the Calgary Flames are shopping around these days.
While we’ll hear plenty about Iginla and his potential destinations as the trade deadline nears, Jay Feaster has already told teams that he’s interested in unloading a couple of other players from their current roster: Anton Babchuk and Cory Sarich.
Neither one is going to be a guy that a team is going to acquire to be an impact player on the blue line. They’re barely cracking the lineup every night with the Flames, let alone a club that is actually decent.
Babchuk has played in just two games this season and has a minus-2 rating for the year, to go along with one point. In 12 games this season, Sarich is a putrid minus-7 to go along with virtually nothing on the stat sheet.
What each of them do bring to the equation is some size and physicality. Babchuk is 6’5″ and Sarich is 6’4″, with 21 hits in those 12 games this season. So a team looking for a sixth or seventh defenseman is going to have some interest based off of that fact alone.
It’s almost comical that Feaster sent out a memo to other clubs that these guys were available. Most of the attention figures to be on the likes of Iginla and Miikka Kiprusoff. But Babchuk and Sarich could garner a little interest for a team looking to pick up an emergency defenseman on the cheap.
Of course, Feaster could be asking a lot for either one of them, which would be a totally Jay Feaster thing to do.
