Washington Capitals Have a Real Chance at the Postseason

Evan Habeeb-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Capitals have been streaking lately, and they have known exactly what needs to be done in each game. Captain Alex Ovechkin has been a shining star for Adam Oates’ Capitals, and is proving that he is the captain that Washington needs.

While the Caps still are out of the playoff race a bit, they are inching closer to that always coveted playoff spot. There are multiple things that they will need to improve on to make the playoffs, but I believe they are very capable of changing and converting into a real playoff team coming down the stretch.

The penalty killing must get better for the Capitals, as they have been miserable all season long. In arguably their worst phase of the game this year, they are ranked 28th in the league with a percentage of 77.1%. In their upcoming game against the New York Islanders, they will have to shut down their power play that is ranked 4th in the league. Led by John Tavares and Matt Moulson, Washington is going to have to come up with a plan to improve their PK and help the offense, keeping the pressure off of the offense.

Something that the Capitals have been doing the best at during their recent stretch is starting. Whether it’s starting the game, starting power plays, or even shootouts, Adam Oates has to be proud of his squad. If they continue this trend in their Tuesday night game against the Islanders, they will certainly have a great chance.
