Will Ian White Finish The 2013 Season With Detroit Red Wings?
Last season, Ian White was a great addition for the Detroit Red Wings, scoring seven goals and adding 25 assists. This season has been an overall disappointment for the defenseman, as an injury sidelined him early in the season and a lack of production led to a lot of time in the press box earlier this month. Since finally getting back in the lineup White has a goal and two points in two games, which is good news for a Red Wings team that is in all likelihood looking to move him before the trade deadline.
White still has the potential to be a solid contributor at the NHL level, but there are too many factors working against him in Detroit. Fellow veteran defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo is finally healthy but is also having a hard time cracking a crowded lineup. Youngsters Brendan Smith and Brian Lashoff have earned their spots with the Wings, while Jakub Kindl has elevated his game this season and has proven worthy of a top-four spot. Niklas Kronwall and Jonathan Ericsson aren’t going anywhere, leaving one spot for White, Colaiacovo and Kent Huskins to compete for. Oh, and there’s still Kyle Quincey, who will miss up to another month with a facial injury.
On top of this, the Red Wings are considered the frontrunner to sign free agent defenseman Danny DeKeyser, who just finished his junior season at Western Michigan University. The trade deadline is getting closer every day, and don’t expect Detroit to be silent before it comes.
