Five Ottawa Senators Injuries
Ottawa Senators: How Injuries Affected This Team
If someone came up to me at the start of the year and told me that the Ottawa Senators would be in a playoff spot without their top five guys, I would have laughed. Now, looking at what this team has done, they can laugh at me. Senators fans are happily surprised with what their "Pesky Sens" have done so far this season.
When Erik Karlsson, Jason Spezza, Craig Anderson, Jared Cowen and Milan Michalek all went down, it was assumed that Ottawa wasn't going to make the playoffs and they would begin their spiral down to last place. Ottawa has done the opposite of that. This season can be turned into a movie. A professional hockey team, plagued with injuries overc laughed omes all this adversity and makes the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Now, the second part to the Senators movie needs to be written, but they are on pace to have a Blockbuster unthinkable.
Injuries can hurt every team and it’s common for a team with one superstar to start losing when their top guy goes down, but Ottawa at that. They proved that injuries can make any team stronger. “What doesn't kill me only makes me stronger.” Ottawa is the epitome of that quote. For the remainder of the season, Ottawa could have rolled over and given up, but instead, they went to the office every day and fought like there is no tomorrow. Currently sitting in a playoff spot, Ottawa is only a month away from achieving the unthinkable.
Craig Anderson- Ankle Sprain
Craig Anderson, the beast in between the pipes, was sidelined with an ankle sprain. The leader in goals against average and save percentage, has been gone for over a month. Like Cowen, he is close to returning from his injury.
Jared Cowen- Season Ending Hip Surgery
Jared Cowen, the young, promising Ottawa defenceman was sidelined after a hip surgery. His presence was normally felt on any given night and Cowen may return to the lineup soon.
Erik Karlsson- Lacerated Achilles Tendon
After a brutal laceration to Karlsson's Achilles Tendon, he was reported out indefinitely. The Norris Trophy winner is out of the lineup and it doesn't look like he'll return soon.
Milan Michalek- Knee Surgery
Michalek played in a good chunk of games this season, but was then placed in the press box due to an arthroscopic knee surgery. Currently he is out indefinitely, but he has been making progress.
Jason Spezza- Back Injury
After having back surgery, it was said that Spezza could possibly return to the lineup this season. Recent reports have the top centre out for the remainder of the season.
