Ottawa Senators Must Make Trade Before Deadline

Marc DesRosiers-USA TODAY Sports

There is one thing that can be said about the Ottawa Senators: they are a team that isn’t going to allow their opponents to score many goals.

That said, the Senators are in desperate need of help on offense going forward. It is time for them to make a trade before the deadline.

It looks like Jason Spezza won’t be back before the playoffs (or even then), so Ottawa needs to bring someone in from the outside that can score goals. Sergei Gonchar is leading the team in points as a defensemen, and while the Senators are winning on a consistent basis, it won’t continue.

The goaltending will break down some at some point. I don’t believe fully in the abilities of Ben Bishop and Craig Anderson yet. They are both very talented goalies, but I wonder how well they will hold on under playoff pressure.

There aren’t a lot of teams who are completely out of it right now in the NHL so there may be slim pickings, but Ottawa needs to do something.

I was of the belief that Jarome Iginla would have been a nice addition, but he got moved elsewhere. It just means that the Senators need to dig even deeper for an offensive addition before the playoffs. Ottawa is in fifth place right now in the Eastern Conference and while they could finish in fourth place by the end of the season, I’m not sure how far that can go.

The time has come to make a move, and one that will change the team’s fortunes this year.
