GM Bryan Murray of the Ottawa Senators, dipped his toes into the Tradecentre Pool, acquiring the highly skilled 23 year old Cory Concaher. Although, to get a player with Conacher’s skill, he had to give someone in return — Ben Bishop.
It’s a bittersweet day for Ottawa fans. Conacher has been a solid forward this season with 24 points. Conacher will be able to help the depleted Ottawa lineup where not one Senator has 10 or more goals this season. Ben Bishop, now a former Ottawa Senator, has excelled in the absence of starter Craig Anderson.
With Anderson returning to the lineup shortly, everyone knew Bishop or Robin Lehner would be moved. Yet, it was sort of spontaneous that Bishop would be the one dealt. There were rumours that Bishop would be moved, but it seems the Tampa Bay Lightning were a wildcard.
How does this trade affect Ottawa? Well, it seems Robin Lehner will be getting the number one spot until injured Craig Anderson returns. After Lehner’s spectacular performance last night, it seems fit that he would get even more playing time — even though it does come at the expense of Ben Bishop.
Ottawa succeeded this Trade Deadline. Although Bishop has been a solid goalie for Ottawa, in the long run, the potential of Conacher is too great for the Senators to miss. It was either Lehner or Bishop to stay, and Bryan Murray opted to go with Lehner. If Ottawa didn’t make a trade before the deadline, that would have been fine as well. In the end, they made a trade that they can be proud of. With Anderson and Lehner in between the pipes, Ottawa now officially has a dynamic-duo.
Senators fans say farewell to Bishop, but welcome newcomer Cory Conacher with open arms.
