Tonight at 9 PM Eastern, the Detroit Red Wings continue their western road trip when they face off against the Colorado Avalanche for the second time this week. On Monday, the Red Wings played host to the Avalanche, pulling out a 2-3 win on the ice of Joe Louis Arena.
The win did not come without its fair share of drama. What started out as a 0-3 lead, quickly turned into a one-point affair with the Avalanche trying desperately to tie the game before time expired. The Wings were able to hold off, but the momentum was clearly with the visiting team. Had the clock not saved them, the game may have had a very different outcome.
The Avalanche will look to keep that momentum going when the puck drops. They will need to start fast and keep it going if they want to avoid suffering a season sweep at the hands of one of their bitterest rivals. Detroit won both of the first two matchups by just a single point. Following Monday’s third period, the Avalanche know this game is theirs for the taking.
The Red Wings are fighting to maintain their spot in the Western Conference playoffs. Although this is not necessarily a “must-win” game, they cannot afford to lose many more. Outside of the one win against the Avalanche on Monday, Detroit has lost their last four games.
With the Red Wings’ season hanging in the balance, every game becomes a matter of importance. For the Avalanche, keeping the Wings from the season sweep is a matter of pride. Helping to keep the Wings from reaching the playoffs salvages a bit of satisfaction from an otherwise disappointment of a season.
