There are going to be some nights where things don’t go right for every team. The Toronto Maple Leafs experienced a night like that on Thursday during a 5-3 loss. The Maple Leafs had the previous four days off before the game and it’s possible that the team got a bit rusty during that time. The thing that concerned me about the loss though was the play of James Reimer. Reimer gave up four goals after the long layoff and I’m sure there will be some people who want Ben Scrivens back in net again.
That would be an overreaction obviously just because of one game but if Reimer struggles again in Toronto’s next game on Saturday, the seat becomes very warm under Reimer. I had said that the team needed to make a deal for another goalie but I have relaxed that stance with how well Reimer had been playing. It would have been nice to get another veteran in there but if Reimer can shake off this loss and go back to his average of just over two goals given up a game, I wouldn’t worry about him.
The Maple Leafs are going to be a team that makes the playoffs without any major problems it would appear. The goaltending situation will be something to watch for as the final weeks of the regular season go by however. I feel confident that Toronto will stick with Reimer in net because of his recent play but Scrivens could find himself getting some extra starts before this 2013 regular season comes to an end.
