With the Carolina Hurricanes recent struggles, they have decided to call up a few young players from the Charlotte Checkers. Brett Bellemore, who impressed the coaches and staff, was called up after many of the Canes defensemen were injured earlier in the season. Zac Dalpe, whostarted off with the Hurricanes at the beginning of the season, was sent back to the minor leagues when he struggled to put up points.
Many expected Dalpe to make the team this year out of training camp and stick with them. In his first few games, he did a good job providing speed to the second line of Jordan Staal and Jeff Skinner. He also managed to earn two assists in the first few games. As the season continued, Dalpe wasn’t able to add any more offense and was eventually sent down to the Checkers.
Dalpe has had another solid season in the AHL with 38 points in 48 games this season. He is also ranked second on the team in goals (19) and leads the team in plus-minus with a plus 16. Dalpe may get the chance to play on the team’s second line to provide some offense, or may be put on the third line for depth scoring.
Bellemore looked like a strong defenseman in his first series of NHL play. He provided the Hurricanes with the grit and defensive awareness that the team was searching for. He also was able to play on the team’s penalty kill and made few mistakes. Bellemore deserves another chance on the team and will likely play on the bottom defensive pairing.
