Hold onto your hats, this playoff race in the Western Conference is about to get mighty intense. And somehow, the Dallas Stars look like they’re going to be a part of it.
As of right now, there are several teams battling for the last couple spots in the playoffs out west. There are five teams outside of the playoff picture right now that have at least 38 points. No one, outside of the two bottom points, are any more than five points out of a potential playoff berth.
One of those teams is the Stars, who are surprisingly right in the thick of things for the playoffs in the Western Conference. That comes despite trading away a couple of key veterans on their roster prior to the trade deadline. But do they actually stand a chance of getting in?
The Stars are currently sitting in 10th in the West. They have 39 points, which is four points out of a playoff spot. It’s important to note that they also have a game-in-hand over the Detroit Red Wings, who currently occupy the eighth spot. They trail them by just one in regard to regulation and overtime wins.
Looking at the numbers, it’s hard to see how this team is still battling for a playoff spot. They’re a middle-of-the-road club offensively, coming in in 13th in goals per game. They’re towards the bottom of the league in goals against, with special teams that each rank in the league’s bottom half.
Though it’s hard to imagine this team actually grabbing one of those final postseason berths, it’s actually pretty impressive that this team is hanging around in the race. With some of the young talent that they currently have coming up through the ranks, this team has the potential to be a very dangerous club within the next couple of years.
