Don’t look now, but the Washington Capitals are surging heading into the latter half of the lockout shortened season. Sure, they still have multiple games left, but if they keep playing like they are right now, expect them to have an easy road to the playoffs. Led by Alex Ovechkin, this team is peaking at the right time.
They faced a very tough task against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday night, but they battled hard and ended up winning 4-2 as Ovechkin netted two goals in an impressive performance.
Now, Washington will head to their neighbors up north to take on the Montreal Canadiens. This will be a very tough battle for the Capitals as they will look to get their 21st victory of the year against a team that has 55 points, two of which came when they beat the Boston Bruins on Saturday.
The Canadiens are a very good team, and the Capitals have to focus on playing a clean game. Montreal is going to score, and Washington has to make sure they don’t make mistakes that simply shouldn’t be made. Whether it’s penalties, cheap shot hits, blatant risky passes, or anything of the sort, the Capitals have to play the cleanest game of their season. If they don’t, Montreal will take advantage and score many times.
Look for Jason Chimera to have a big game. Chimera is usually a pretty physical player, but this game should give him a great opportunity to shine as an offensive star and give him a couple of chances to lead the Capitals to a big win.
