Currently in ninth place in the Western Conference standings and with only 10 games left in the regular season, the Phoenix Coyotes don’t have a lot of room for mistakes. They have a chance at a playoff spot, but being anything less than perfect may not give them much of one.
Phoenix is just three points behind the Detroit Red Wings who are presently in eighth place; however, there are three teams (Dallas Stars, Edmonton Oilers, Columbus Blue Jackets) just one point behind the Coyotes who are also vying for a chance at the eighth and final playoff spot as well, so they’re not in the most ideal situation as it stands right now.
The Coyotes are currently on a three-game road trip that begins tonight against the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena. They go into tonight’s game with three consecutive wins under their belts and the momentum from that could get them off to a good start. Phoenix will also face the Oilers and Calgary Flames before returning home to face the San Jose Sharks a week from tonight. If they want a chance at a playoff spot, the Coyotes will need to defeat both the Oilers and Flames in order to give them a little more breathing room. Obviously, the more wins they can rack up, the better off they’ll be in the standings and they’ll likely have a better idea of where they stand after returning from this road trip.
