NHL Los Angeles Kings

Anze Kopitar Leading Los Angeles Kings Towards Possible Repeat

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

It was a fairly slow start to the shortened NHL season for the Los Angeles Kings. The Kings looked out of sorts coming off their Stanley Cup title, but they have turned things around and are now in prime position to make a run at repeating. There are many players that can be pointed at for this turnaround, but I look at Anze Kopitar as the biggest piece of the puzzle. Kopitar is up to 38 points in 42 games now including six points in eight games during the month of April. Los Angeles will need Kopitar to play like this all the way through the playoffs for the team to repeat.

Kopitar didn’t score in three of his first five games this year, but he has really turned it on since then. He is now leading the team in points for the season.  It has been obvious during Kopitar’s career that he is one of the best scorers in the entire NHL. He showed that in the postseason last year with 20 points in 20 games. Los Angeles has the potential to do something special this season with a repeat.

It is going to come down to whether Kopitar and his teammates can continue their hot streak of games. The Kings are in a tie for fourth place in the Western Conference with five games to go. There are three teams within three points of Los Angeles as well for that position so the Kings must finish strong. The last five games feature four teams in striking range of the playoffs or in right now. This is the time where Kopitar will prove his worth to the team.
