Dallas Stars: Goal Scoring Has Not Been There For Jamie Benn

As this Dallas Stars club heads into the end of the season and into the future, there’s no doubt as to who the most important player on the team is. Coming off of signing a lucrative new contract just after the season began, Jamie Benn has proven he has the chops to be a franchise player.

While he still has a bit of growing in his game, he’s going to be a superstar in this game for quite some time. Not even 24 years old yet, he already has an impressive resume. This season has been no exception, even after he started late due to contract negotiations.

If this were a full season, it’s very likely that Benn would be floating around his career high for points. He has 29 points in 35 games this season. His career year came last season, when he tallied 63 points, including 26 goals, in 71 games on the year.

While Benn has been very good for the Stars this year, he hasn’t been putting the puck in the back of the net in the way that we’ve grown accustomed to seeing. After 26 goals last season, albeit in a full season, he has only 10 so far during the 2013 season.

Prior to scoring a pair of goals on Monday night, Benn hadn’t scored a goal in his last eight. He had a streak earlier this season in which he didn’t find the back of the net in 12 consecutive games.

Benn is still finding a way to make an impact in other ways. He’s still a playmaker, with 19 assists on the season, and an effective forward in the physical game as well. If the Stars are going to reach the postseason, though, they’ll need more from him in the goal scoring department.
