These continue to be some frightening times for the city of Boston—and its surrounding areas—and once again, a Boston Bruins game may be adversely affected as a result.
Very late last night, one person suspected in the Boston Marathon bombing died following a confrontation with police, but another person, his brother, escaped. That has triggered a citywide search that is actually still underway as of this writing: shutting down all public transportation into and out of the city, plus requesting that people stay indoors and just wait for this to come to a resolution. It’s created some strange and eerie photographs of a city that’s usually bustling with life looking more like something out of the latest zombie apocalypse movie.
This extends to both the Bruins and the Pittsburgh Penguins, who are already in town per the NHL‘s policy that visitors arrive the night before a game. The Penguins are still at their hotel right now and are not planning to make the sojourn to TD Garden for morning skate. Nor are the Bruins. Since they’re all sheltering in place and won’t do morning skate, it’s impossible for me to say what things like lines may look like tonight or which goalie will be on for sure.
They did, however, practice yesterday before this manhunt began. At that time, here was an interesting thing to note: Milan Lucic had been demoted so far down the lines that he was in green. Yes, green, with Kaspars Daugavins and Jay Pandolfo. This leads me to wonder if Carl Soderberg might make his debut in this game and the chronically unimpressive Lucic might finally take a night off to watch the proceedings from the ninth floor.
This is also the only game between these two teams slated to be played in Boston. The Penguins have won the other two, both played in early March, each by a single goal.
Of course, this is all built on the assumption that tonight’s game will even happen as scheduled. The team or league hasn’t officially said anything about it either way as of this writing, but I did read a report from a Boston TV station that said the game is iffy or on hold for now. Again, stay tuned for later definitive updates that would be official releases from the Bruins organization. The game on Monday was announced as officially postponed before 5 p.m., so a definite up or down decision could come pretty close to puck drop.
