Though the Toronto Maple Leafs have an entire postseason to worry about, for the first time in a long time, it’s probably worth it to take a look at a bit of the future of the Leafs organization. One key player who is on this roster right now is up for free agency this summer.
That player is Tyler Bozak. While he isn’t the offensive star that some of the other players on this roster are, he’s proven an important part of what they are doing up in Toronto. He’s an unrestricted free agent this summer and it’s sounding like he’s going to command quite a bit of money.
As of right now, Bozak carries a cap hit of just $1.5 million. That’s not a bad price at all for what he brings to the table. One could actually consider it a bargain. He’s earned a raise, no doubt. But he’s expected to ask for a much bigger raise than anyone could have expected.
He’s coming off one of the two best seasons of his career, with 27 points in 44 games this season, with nine points coming with the Leafs on the man advantage. What Bozak does do very well is win faceoffs. He’s 53 percent for the season and has a history of being very successful at the dot.
But does that make him worth the $5 million that he’s reportedly going to ask for? Not by a long shot. That doesn’t mean he won’t get it, though. The salary cap is coming down, so you have to wonder if teams will be willing to shell out the cash for him. But also consider the fact that it’s an extremely thin free agent class, once again. Teams are looking for center depth. He could get it, or at least near it.
Whether or not Bozak gets what he’s asking for isn’t so much the point. The point is that he’s not worth $5 million. It will be interesting to see what he does end up fetching on the free agent market this summer, though.
