Chicago Blackhawks Goalies Win William M. Jennings Trophy

Tommy Giglio-USA TODAY Sports

Thank you Boston for being strong.

The Boston Bruins scored a power play goal in the second period of the regular season finale versus the Ottawa Senators to win the Chicago Blackhawks the William M. Jennings Trophy. The trophy is awarded to the goalkeeper(s) having played a minimum of 25 games for the team with the fewest goals scored against it.

The Bruins goal was the 103rd given up by the Senators which is one more than the Hawks have given up this season. Goalies Corey Crawford and Ray Emery are the second consecutive Central division goalies to win the trophy as Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott of the St. Louis Blues won it last year.

The trophy has been awarded as far back as 1946, however, it wasn’t until the 1981-82 season that it was renamed the Jennings Trophy (it was previously the original incarnation of the Vezina Trophy) and given specifically to the team’s goalies. The Hawks are no stranger to the trophy thanks to legendary goalie Ed Belfour who won the trophy three times with Chicago before grabbing a fourth with the Dallas Stars. With the win, the franchise now has four Jennings trophies to its name, second only to five time winners of the Montreal Canadiens and the New Jersey Devils.

Keep your ears peeled for more hardware related news as the playoffs get underway, for the Hockey Writers Association of America has already sent out their ballots and literally every category has Chicago guys in the running.

Of course, I think it’s safe to say if they can bring the Cup back to Chicago, they’d all gladly melt down anything they win for scrap metal.
