The Pittsburgh Penguins swept the Carolina Hurricanes in the fourth and final game of the Eastern Conference Final beating them by a score of 4-1 at the RBC Center in front of a crowd of 18,680; it was the sixth sweep in team history and the fourth time Pittsburgh made it to the Stanley Cup Final.

The Penguins beat the Chicago Blackhawks by a score of 5-4 in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final; Mario Lemieux scored with 12 seconds remaining in the game at the Civic Arena in front of a home crowd of 16,164 fans.

Lemieux was voted as most outstanding NHL player by the Players’ Association earning him the Lester B. Pearson Trophy.
