More defensive draft options for the Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers organization has put out a list of 10 prospects they still have on their radar in preparation for the 2013 NHL Draft at the end of June. Not surprisingly, Darnell Nurse, Max Domi, Hunter Shinkaruk and Rasmus Ristolainen are all on the list. Of the remaining six options, three of those players are defenseman, which means that the Flyers are seriously considering a blueliner as their first pick.

One of the three options is Nikita Zadorov of the OHL‘s London Knights. The Russian defenseman has been talked about a lot as another key option for the team, which makes sense since his skating skills have been compared to Flyers’ Braydon Coburn. He knows how to use his size to his advantage and is already gaining praise from scouts. He was also a key asset to the Knights as they made it to the semi-finals of the Memorial Cup last week.

Another option the Flyers are looking at is Samuel Morin from the QMJHL‘s Rimouski Oceanic team. His name is not as well talked about but he still is a solid defensive option. He plays physical and will intimidate forwards with his checks, but he also needs to cool it with the slashing and cross checking, as it will be risky for the team in terms of PIMS. He also needs to work on getting to the net. But with 20 assists this season, he’s a solid passer.

The third defenseman that has been talked about a lot is Ryan Pulock of the WHL‘s Brandon Wheat Kings. The downside is that he’s a bit of a slow skater, which can be a problem. However, he also knows how to play both ends of the ice and is a key offensive defenseman. He’s also a big defenseman with a mean streak, which is some thing we like in Philly.
