For the first time, an NHL goaltender could be on the cover of EA Sports NHL video game. It’s about time too, since the goaltender is the backbone of every team. But in hockey, they seem to get less recognition than a league-scoring leader.
As we head into the final round of the NHL Cover Vote, veteran New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur and budding Columbus Blue Jackets netminder Sergei Bobrovsky will go head-to-head in the final round of voting. So who will it be, the aging goalie on his way to retirement or the up and coming star who just might lead his struggling team to victory?
Philadelphia Flyers fans actually have a stake in the final round. Wayne Simmonds may have gotten voted out, but at least someone who once wore the Flyers logo proud on their chest could grace the cover this year.A lot of fans were really disappointed when the organization traded backup goalie Bobrovsky to the Jackets for draft picks. So of course when the player got the start with the Western team, we were equally happy and irritated. Happy to see “Bob” do well, and irritated with Flyers GM Paul Holmgren for not having faith in the player. So fans have been backing Bob mostly out of loyalty and because we secretly hope one day he will pull on the orange and black sweater once more. Even though it’s pretty unlikely.
As for Brodeur, he is also very deserving of the honor to be on the cover. Already being referred to as a “Future Hall of Fame player” Brodeur has had a pretty successful career. If you ignore the lackluster season he had with the Devils this year. His performance was definitely the by-product of the lockout-shortened season. However, that should not count him out for being on the cover. He’s still a great player and being on the cover would be a great way to end his hockey career. That is of course if he intends to retire before next season.
Either if these goalies would be great to grace the cover of NHL 14, but since I dislike the Devils a lot as a Flyers fan, I’ll be rooting for Bob.
