I know that I have been very critical of many things that involve the Phoenix Coyotes in the past. I have wanted them to trade players away to get better and find an owner who could take the team out of town. It looks like the team is going to stay in Phoenix and another major move could come with it.
That said, the team should not consider trading Shane Doan at any point before his career ends.
Doan is 36-years old now and will be 37 when next season begins. He was still a productive player this season with 27 points, including a team-high 13 goals. He may not be a player who is going to lead the NHL in scoring, but he is the perfect player for the Coyotes. He has been there for his entire career ever since he was a first-round draft pick in 1995. It isn’t time to trade him away unless he makes it very clear that he wants to win a title before he retires.
I really don’t see that happening though. I love to see players stay with one team for their entire career, and Doan is on pace to do that. It is not the time to mess that up now. The Coyotes didn’t miss the playoffs by much this past season. If they can make a couple of moves here and there to improve places that aren’t producing, Phoenix may have enough to make the playoffs again soon.
When that happens, Doan should be front and center in their efforts to win a title.
