Insider reports have come out stating frankly that Jonathan Bernier, goalie for the Los Angeles Kings, will finally be leaving the club in search for a starting role. Most analysts suspect that the trade will come as late as draft day, and the team has over 10 clubs interested in Bernier.
One report says that a trip to the Philadelphia Flyers could be on the horizon in a trade for Matt Read, and that would require the buyout of Ilya Bryzgalov’s contract. Those teams are likely partners as they have done a lot business lately, and both coaching staffs and front offices are connected.
Another team suspected to join in the hunt is the New Jersey Devils. They have an old man for a goaltender now, and it could be the perfect place for Bernier to make his impression while still on a team that will make the playoffs.
The Buffalo Sabres have been having their own goalie issues with Ryan Miller. If he moves, they could be a contender for Bernier’s services. Miller has been called a “cancer” in the locker room. While Bernier didn’t complain about sitting on the bench when the Kings won the Stanley Cup, Miller won’t complain about leaving the Sabres organization.
Jonathan Bernier has not been second fiddle because his play was poor by any means as he had some of the best statistics of all goalies. He is a talented individual with a solid technique. Unlike his current partner, he is much more comfortable at handling the puck.
Regardless of the team, he will most likely end up in the Eastern Conference. The Kings will not want to play against him very often.
