There are a lot of young players who are making a huge impact around the NHL these days. That talent is bringing high prices as well when it is time to re-sign them. The San Jose Sharks made sure they locked up one of their young stars with a contract extension for Logan Couture on Monday according to various reports. He was set to be a restricted free agent after next season so it was smart for the Sharks to lock him up now.
He scored 21 goals this season in San Jose and added 17 assists, and he had scored 65 points the previous year in 80 games. This is going to be the star for the future of the Sharks. You can’t assume that Joe Thornton will be around forever, and someone needs to be the offensive star when that day comes. The team is investing a lot in the fact that Couture will be that player. He has been a very steady player for the last three seasons in San Jose and has scored 84 goals over that time.
I will take any player who has averaged 28 goals a season during that time while remembering that this season was shortened so Couture may have hit 35 or even 40 goals. I believe that the Sharks are sitting pretty with the current roster of players they have. If they could have just won a road playoff game, San Jose would have probably made it very close to a Stanley Cup this year. This is a very smart move by the Sharks looking ahead to their future in getting Couture under contract now.
