There are going to be a lot of players discussed by the Toronto Maple Leafs this offseason.

The name Stephen Weiss has come up lately, and I think the Maple Leafs need to make the bold move and find a way to get him away from the Florida Panthers. He will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason so the team would only be trading for his rights before free agency hits on July 5.

Weiss is 30-years old and wasn’t very good this season with only one goal and three assists in 17 games. You wouldn’t think that a player with those kinds of stats would be in that much of demand, but Weiss was injured and was out after March 3 because of wrist surgery. It Toronto could pair Weiss with Phil Kessel, there is something to be excited about.

It would allow the team to move Nazem Kadri to the second line and the Maple Leafs would have a solid top line led by Weiss and Kessel. They would need to give up a draft pick to make this happen, but I don’t see that being a major problem.

I think the team is at a crossroads now. They can either go all-in this coming season to see if they can win the Stanley Cup or begin to rebuild around Kadri with a trade of Kessel. The better idea would obviously be trying to get Weiss. Toronto could be a serious contender to win the title next season if this trade were to happen.
