Columbus Blue Jackets Should Re-Sign Vinny Prospal
It was a season to remember in a lot of ways from the Columbus Blue Jackets. There are going to be decisions that need to be made concerning next year’s roster as soon as possible, though, including with leading scorer Vinny Prospal. He may be 38 years old, but the team must find a way to get him re-signed going into the 2013-14 season.
Prospal had 30 points including 12 goals to help lead the Blue Jackets close to a playoff berth. The problem becomes whether or not Columbus wants to spend the money to keep him around. There are other key players including Vezina Trophy winner Sergei Bobrovsky who needs a new contract as well. I didn’t think the Blue Jackets had any chance of being close to the playoffs this season after moves they made last offseason. They proved me wrong and now have a chance to get back to the playoffs.
It means giving Prospal a two or three-year contract worth around $8 million. He made $2.5 million this past year and deserves a raise after his play. He has given his all to the fans in Columbus and the team should do whatever they can to keep their crowd favorite in town.
The addition of Marian Gaborik at the trade deadline gives more substance to this idea. If the Blue Jackets can put those two on the same line together, it is going to force opposing teams to use their best defensemen against them. It should open things up for others and that’s the best thing that could happen in Columbus. It’s time to get this deal done before Prospal hits free agency on July 5.
