While they’re not in a position where they have to trade him, and there’s no indication that they are absolutely going to, we’re going to hear a lot about Anaheim Ducks forward Bobby Ryan for the next week heading up to the draft, and potentially beyond. In a thin free agent market, he’s a hot name out on the trade rumor circuit.
The Ducks have already had at least one team call on Ryan, that being the Philadelphia Flyers, and they could have more come calling heading up to Sunday. Whether or not they will move him is up for debate, but you can bet that they’ll put heavy consideration into it.
Especially considering the return that they may get. Ryan is an upper tier offensive player and a top line winger. He can put in goals with the best of them, with four consecutive 30 goal seasons prior to this, when the lockout caused his production to tail off, as he managed only 11 in 46 games.
Any way you slice it, the Ducks are going to take back quite a haul for Ryan. One rumor had the Ducks taking back defenseman Braydon Coburn and a first round pick. And that’s on the lighter end of expectations. They could feasibly end up with someone like Matt Read, a prospect, and a pick, if they so desired. And those two are just if they made the deal with Philly.
If the Ducks seek out a trade for Ryan, and with their eventually inability to afford him, indications are that they will, they’ll likely acquire at least one roster player in such a deal. Whether they want a forward or a defenseman remains to be seen. But they could grab a top six forward or a top four defenseman in a deal.
Depending on who they end up dealing with, a prospect is possible in addition to the player. Maybe not a high level prospect, but a guy that projects as a decent role player is someone a team might be willing to deal. Then there’s the pick. Anyone outside of the top 10 might be willing to move a first round pick in addition to everything else.
Of course, this is all speculation. Bottom line, there’s a reason that the Ducks are trying to deal Bobby Ryan. They’re going to be able to improve their roster’s strength overall, with young players ready to step up into his offensive role. Obviously, t’s just a matter of what they want in exchange for him, and who they end up dealing with, that will determine what they take back.
