New Jersey Devils right winger David Clarkson, who has been a huge pain in the side of New York Rangers players and fans over the years, is now an unrestricted free agent. With that being said, I say let bygones be bygones, and the Rangers should definitely have Clarkson on their radar and quickly hone in on him this offseason.
Clarkson is a gritty agitator with the ability to score goals and do the dirty work needed to help his team win games, which is something the Rangers lacked last season to some extent, and what new head coach Alain Vigneault certainly lacked in Vancouver.
I believe Clarkson, at 29-years old with a less than $3 million cap hit for the Devils last season, would be a steal if the Rangers were to get him. Yes, I know he will probably ask for more money, but hopefully not a lot more, and with the Devils in a bit of a financial crisis to say the least and them wanting to re-sign Patrick Elias, the Rangers can definitely swoop in and steal Clarkson away from their rivals in New Jersey.
Some Rangers fans will of course oppose getting Clarkson, mostly because he has gotten under the Rangers’ skin for years now and has been rather effective against The Blueshirts, but the team has to use their heads. This is a business and fans cannot hold grudges against players on rival teams.
I’m sure a lot of Rangers fans were not in favor of the team getting Sean Avery years back but he quickly became a fan favorite. I believe if the Rangers do sign Clarkson this offseason, he will quickly become a fan favorite as well.
