It is starting to anger me as a diehard New York Rangers fan to see Dan Girardi overlooked time after time. If every scout, commentator, and fan can realized Girardi is a top 10 defenseman in the league then it is time for the Canadian national team to realize it too.

Girardi was snubbed and left off the preliminary roster for the 2014 Olympics. This is a stunning move that has shocked a lot of people. Girardi has developed over the years into a top shutdown defenseman in the NHL. He is continually overlooked and underrated even though his play is outstanding. He is the definition of a defensive defenseman who will always take care of his own end of the ice and can occasionally put in a goal with his heavy shot.

The Canadian Olympic team is full of big stars that make headlines all the time. It is mind-boggling how they would leave off someone who is not an offensive defenseman. On a team that is very offensive minded it is certain that they will give up odd man rushes and good opportunities during the course of a game. This is where Girardi shines. He is a gifted shot blocker and can play the two-on-one just as well as anyone in hockey. While he is not a big point producer he is a phenomenal penalty killer, another area that team Canada lacks right now.

Hopefully something changes and gives Girardi the chance to play at the Olympics. It would be a perfect time for him to show the entire world just how good he really is.
