Per the official Dallas Stars Facebook, the team will make a “major announcement” this afternoon at 1:30 p.m. CT. At this point, nothing has been confirmed, but it appears that the Stars are going to be naming Jamie Benn as the next captain of the franchise.
The Stars have not had an official captain since Brendan Morrow was traded last season to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Benn, Stephane Robidas and Ray Whitney were the alternate captains after the Morrow trade.
Benn has been taking steps toward this for a long time now. Admittedly snubbed by the lack of invitation to the Canadian Olympic team summer camp, Benn has been one of the first players to arrive at training camp, and has looked very good during the preseason.
He has more or less been the face of the franchise since the Morrow trade, if not earlier. The Dallas fans are enamored with his ability — a big powerful player who can dangle and score is almost the perfect player for the city that prides itself on hard work and high style. It appears that the contract holdout at the start of last season is now water under the I-35 Bridge.
GM Jim Nill is as good as they come, and if he thinks that Benn is ready to wear the “C”, then I would be inclined to agree with him. As longtime Stars reporter Mike Heika noted, Nill was with the Detroit Red Wings when they named a then 21-year-old Steve Yzerman to captain their team. Yzerman is still known around Detroit as “The Captain”, which is quite incredible considering that Nicklas Lidstrom wore the “C” after Yzerman.
Again, nothing has been confirmed at this point, but after already introducing their new jerseys and making a slew of trades this summer, it would seem unlikely that the Stars would have pulled another trade without news leaking out. It appears that Benn will now wear the “C” in Big D.
As always, I welcome your comments. If you think I’m wrong, I’m willing to listen. Just back it up with some facts and solid evidence. Thanks for reading and good luck this season.
