Stephen Weiss Needs To Be Prolific Goal Scorer For Detroit Red Wings

James Guillory-USA TODAY Sports

Stephen Weiss doesn’t want Detroit Red Wings fans to consider him as a savior of the NHL franchise by any means. He wants badly to win a Stanley Cup, and that’s among the reasons the Wings signed him as a free agent.

He will help the team in scoring, but Weiss needs to put pressure on himself to be a major scorer for the Wings. The more players like Weiss that put pressure on themselves to be proficient goal scorers, the better chance the team has of hoisting the Cup next June.

The Wings were ranked fifth last season in goals per game with 2.545, which was their lowest since 1977. That’s simply not the mark of a Red Wings team. That’s why the Wings needed to add a scorer and when Weiss become available, Detroit offered him a contract after 11 seasons with the Florida Panthers.

What the Wings like about Weiss is he’s a two-year player. They definitely liked him Friday night when he scored the overtime winner at the Carolina Hurricanes. Weiss is a scoring threat at all times and will make the Red Wings that much better.

Weiss figured when he played for Florida that he needed to take more of the load. He doesn’t look at his situation in Detroit that way. The Wings are deeper than Florida, and Weiss figures being around better teammates will make him a better performer.

The Wings haven’t started out the season scoring that much, so Weiss is probably going to have to be more of a goal-producer than he first thought when he signed with Detroit.
