The New York Rangers are clearly missing some grit and toughness in their lineup. A veteran guy like Arron Asham could be the perfect guy to fill that void.
Head coach Alain Vigneault confirmed that Asham will replace Jesper Fast on the Rangers’ fourth line. While Asham isn’t going to light up any scoreboards, it is nice to see someone who can play and add a little grit to the team. Asham scored some key goals in the playoffs last year. Lets not forget that he outscored star forward Rick Nash in the playoffs (although that’s not saying much). Asham will be on a line with Dominic Moore and Derek Dorsett. This line isn’t going to be a great fourth line like the Boston Bruins have, but it is an admirable fourth line.
Asham admitted that he is fighting for a spot every time he touches the ice. He is an older player known more for his fists than his stick or skates. But Asham is a guy who is well liked by his teammates. He has scored some key goals for the team and has a very good shot for a fighter. The Rangers will need to find consistent fourth line play in order to compete this year. If the fourth line could muster 12 minutes a night I would call that very successful.
Asham is going to get his shot tomorrow night against the Los Angeles Kings. I am expecting him to have some sort of impact on the game, either with his fists or with his good shot.
