Philadelphia Flyers Need To Trade For Thomas Vanek
The Philadelphia Flyers simply have zero scoring punch right now. They are the first NHL team since 1964 to fail to score at least three goals in any of their first eight games. You read that right. There’s no way around it; Philly’s offensive output is simply atrocious.
Something needs to be done about it and pronto. The Flyers seem to lack anybody with touch around the net. They have two excellent play makers in Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek who have an occasional eye for goal, but neither is a true sniper and it is showing this year. The perfect man to fit this bill is Buffalo Sabres forward Thomas Vanek.
Vanek seems to be on the outs in Buffalo as the Sabres are going through a total rebuild. They actually have a worse record than the Flyers believe it or not and aren’t winning any time soon. Vanek was on the trading block for much of last year, but the price was a bit too steep. With Vanek a pending free agent after this year I am guessing that price has gone down.
Flyers GM, and a man very much on the hot seat, Paul Holmgren cannot sit on his laurels at this point. The Flyers have an entire week off and have to stew on their 1-7 start. Changes need to be made and that needs to start with the personnel.
Give up what it takes to get Vanek. Hopefully paired with a star like Giroux he can be an even more prolific goal scorer. An extension is something that can be worried about later, but right now the Flyers have more questions than answers. Those questions clearly won’t be answered internally, so they need to go get Vanek and soon.
