How Long Can Alex Steen Keep Up Hot Start For St. Louis Blues?
Few players in the NHL are off to as hot of a start as Alex Steen this season, and on Tuesday night the veteran forward had another big goal to help the St. Louis Blues get a win over the Winnipeg Jets and improve to 7-1-2 on the season. While it may seem unlikely that Steen can keep up this kind of blistering pace, a Blues team that can always use more offense is in great shape as long as his hot streak continues. Brenden Morrow and Alex Pietrangelo also found the back of the net on Tuesday, and Jaroslav Halak did enough to get the win by making 21 saves on 23 shots.
Steen’s goal came with a bit of dramatic flair, as he connected on the power play with exactly one minute remaining in regulation. It was the second game-winning goal of the season for Steen, who has 11 goals on the season and has netted at least one goal in all but one of his team’s games this season. He’s already surpassed the eight goals he scored last season (40 games), has almost matched the 15 goals he scored two seasons ago (43 games) and looks poised to give his career-high of 24 goals (2009-10 – 68 games) a challenge. Steen’s ice time has increased since the start of the season, and has hovered around 22-23 minutes the past three games. The big knock on the Blues heading into the season was the concern that their offense wouldn’t be able to do enough to compliment their goaltending and defense, but so far that has not been the case. St. Louis is second in the league with an average of 3.8 goals per game, and they have the league’s best power play at the moment.
The Jets have now lost five of their last six games, and haven’t scored more than two goals in any of their last four outings.
