Callahan missed the first game of this season while recovering from a torn labrum in the offseason. Just as he was beginning to find his groove, he got hurt blocking a shot. A lot of people have questioned why Callahan would block a shot while the team was up by two goals, but that is just the type of player Callahan is. He is the heart and soul of this team and is their most important player.
Now that Callahan is back, J.T. Miller is likely to be a healthy scratch. The line combinations are still unclear, but with the Rangers playing so well, you might see Callahan on the third line. The lines of Derek Stepan–Mats Zuccarello–Chris Kreider and Brad Richards–Carl Hagelin–Benoit Pouliot have been clicking.
I could see a line of Derick Brassard, Brian Boyle and Callahan being the Rangers’ third line. Callahan will definitely be killing penalties. For the Rangers, his return comes at the perfect time. The team is starting to find itself and he will finally be back to help them. This game against the Ducks tonight is also a revenge game after the Rangers were embarrassed by the Ducks 6-0 in October.
Callahan’s return is sure to get Madison Square Garden bumping tonight. He plays in all situations and his return is going to help this team tremendously.
