Anaheim Ducks Keep Winning Despite Special Teams Woes

A 13-3-1 record and 27 points has the Anaheim Ducks on top of the NHL standings after a 5-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Wednesday night. The Ducks have now won six of their last seven games and have a perfect record at home, even though their power play ranks last in the league and their penalty kill is second-worst. The Ducks won 22 of their first 27 games last season and entered the playoffs as the second seed, and they look more than prepared to enter the postseason in similar fashion in 2014. For all the problems on special teams, the Ducks’ goaltending and offense have been outstanding.

Rookie Frederik Andersen is 4-0 between the pipes, while Jonas Hiller is 7-2-1 with a 2.47 goals-against average. Against the Coyotes, Hiller made 24 saves and turned aside every shot he saw in the game’s final 27 minutes. With Viktor Fasth sidelined, Andersen’s performance has been a blessing, and it marks the second season that the Ducks have seen a rookie netminder shine while playing alongside Hiller.

Offensively, four players have 10 points or more this season. Ryan Getzlaf lead the team with 18 points thanks to a goal and an assist against the Coyotes, and Corey Perry sits right behind him thanks to hot streak that has featured four goals in three games. On Wednesday, the Ducks once again showcased some scoring depth as rookie Hampus Lindholm scored his first career goal and added an assist, and defenseman Cam Fowler scoring his first goal of the season. Fowler and Getzlaf connected on the power play, which is hopefully a sign that the Ducks’ special teams issues are improving. Those goals with the man-advantage were the first in five games and only the fifth and sixth of the entire season.
